BIO:
By blending contemporary power pop with elements of the post-grunge era, Gin Blossoms briefly emerged as torchbearers of the lighter side of alternative rock. Bassist Bill Leen and guitarist Doug Hopkins formed the band in 1987 in Tempe, AZ, rounding out the initial lineup with vocalist Jesse Valenzuela, guitarist Richard Taylor, and drummer Chris McCann. The following year saw several personnel shifts as the band struggled to solidify — McCann was replaced by Dan Henzerling (and, shortly thereafter, Phillip Rhodes), while Taylor was fired and replaced by guitarist Robin Wilson. Wilson and Valenzuela subsequently switched roles, and the band recorded a self-released album, Dusted, in 1989. A&M signed them the following year. After an impressive debut EP, 1991’s Up & Crumbling, the Gin Blossoms rocketed out of the college pop charts and into the mainstream with their 1993 hit single “Hey Jealousy.” Combining the ringing guitar hooks of the Byrds and R.E.M. with a solid, rootsy drive, the band’s breakthrough full-length album, New Miserable Experience (which had actually been released the previous year), was filled with songs equally as strong as “Hey Jealousy,” including the second hit single, “Found Out About You.” New Miserable Experience and its assorted singles dominated radio and MTV for the following year — “Hey Jealousy” and “Found Out About You,” both penned by Hopkins, remained in heavy radio rotation nearly a year after their initial release — and such success pushed the sales of their debut album to over one million copies.

In the summer of 1995, the Gin Blossoms contributed “‘Till I Hear It from You,” a song they co-wrote with Marshall Crenshaw, to the soundtrack of the film Empire Records. “‘Till I Hear It from You” became a major radio hit, but was never released as an official single until it was featured as the B-side of “Follow You Down,” the first single from the group’s second album, Congratulations…I’m Sorry. Upon its release in February of 1996, Congratulations…I’m Sorry charted well, but within six months, it had disappeared from the charts. Following the supporting tour, the Gin Blossoms disbanded in 1997.

Strangely enough, the group reunited (sans Rhodes and Hopkins who had tragically committed suicide) for a 2001 New Year’s Eve concert. The Gin Blossoms hit the road several months later for a summer tour, drumming up renewed interest with the release of Dusted — originally issued in 1989 as the band’s debut cassette tape — as well as a live DVD, Just South of Nowhere. Four years later, the band unveiled its first batch of new material since the mid-’90s. Major Lodge Victory proved to be sonically similar to the band’s earlier efforts, and the album earned warm critical reviews. Signing with 429 Records, the Blossoms released another collection of new material, No Chocolate Cake, in 2010

BIO:
Bad Bad Hats is an indie rock band from Minneapolis, MN. It is made up of Kerry Alexander (vocals, guitar), Chris Hoge (guitar), Noah Boswell (bass), and Connor Davison (drums). Kerry, Chris, and Noah met while attending Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. Kerry and Chris started writing songs together in 2010, recording a collection of demos that would later become the It Hurts EP. Noah joined the band in 2012 and the trio began performing live. Minneapolis label Afternoon Records signed the group and released the It Hurts EP in early 2013 and their first full-length album, Psychic Reader, in the summer of 2015. As primary songwriter, Kerry’s perspective is the guiding force behind Bad Bad Hats. Psychic Reader was the result of the trio’s sonic growth, drawing from the influences of all three members and bolstered by the experimental touches of the album’s producer, Brett Bullion. When it was time to record their second full-length effort, Bullion introduced the band to Connor Davison, multi-instrumentalist and frontman of another Minneapolis band called Wingman. Connor was recruited to play drums on the new album, but became a full-time member in the process. Since the release of Psychic Reader, the band has toured the U.S. extensively. Their sophomore album is nearly complete. Don’t miss Bad Bad Hats on June 12th at A&R Music Bar!

Quirky art pop outfit Superorganism appeared in early 2017, offering scant information except that the “supergroup” featured eight members, one of whom — a 17-year-old Japanese woman known only as Orono — lived in Maine, while the others all resided in the U.K. An initial single, the wacky, throbbing “Something for Your M.I.N.D.,” quickly caused a media stir before being mysteriously yanked off the internet and replaced by the equally strange “Nobody Cares” and “It’s All Good.” It was later revealed that Superorganism had signed with Domino Records and that seven of the group’s eight members had all moved into a London flat that doubled as their recording studio. The colorful “Everybody Wants to Be Famous” appeared in January 2018 in advance of their self-titled first album, which arrived in March. In a contemporary independent music scene inundated with up and coming bands, it takes a unique outfit to break through that noise. A truly exceptional group must exhibit authenticity, raw talent, and electrifying chemistry. This, of course, means there are very few of them. Motherfolk, a band that started in 2013, is certainly one of those most unique and dynamic acts.Motherfolk began as a collaborative effort between Nathan Dickerson and Bobby Paver, two college friends with a penchant for writing songs with one another. In the first year of the project, the two songwriters made frequent trips to Nashville to record their first endeavor. In 2014, their eponymous debut album showcased the duo’s musical prowess through a genre-bending collection of elegantly crafted songs.

Since then, Karlie Dickerson, Clayton Allender, Joel Call, and Ethan Wescott have joined Motherfolk’s ranks, and the band has made a name for themselves touring all across the nation. The outfit’s high-energy live performances have won over audiences from coast to coast, and their infectious musical persona has become one of the most exciting rising success stories in the indie scene.

In 2016, Motherfolk released their highly anticipated sophomore effort, Fold. They’re aiming to continue their extensive touring schedule. Motherfolk’s best days are ahead of them, and they’re inviting all of their fans along for the ride.

Nicole Atkins w/ Ruby Boots
WHEN: August 16, 2018
WHERE:  The Basement – Columbus, Ohio
DOORS: 7:00pm
COST: $13.00 Advance/$15.00 Day of Show
ON-SALE: April 14, 2018
BIO:
Great Art is a journey — and Nicole Atkins traveled quite a distance to bring us Goodnight Rhonda Lee. As Nicole explains it, “This record came to me at a time of deep transition. Some days were good, some not so good. What I did gain, though, from starting to make some changes and going inward, and putting it out on the table, was a joy in what I do again. Joy in the process and a newfound confidence that I don’t think I’ve ever had until now. The album title, Goodnight Rhonda Lee, also came from those feelings. Rhonda Lee was kind of my alias for bad behavior, and it was time to put that persona to bed.”In order to capture the timelessness she sought, Nicole enlisted a modern day Wrecking Crew: Niles City Sound in Fort Worth, TX, who had just risen to national acclaim as Leon Bridges’ secret weapon. “We spoke the same language. We wanted to make something classic, something that had an atmosphere and a mood of romance and triumph and strength and soul.” The album was recorded in five days, live to tape. The album that Nicole and the boys came up with in those five days, Goodnight Rhonda Lee, is nothing less than Great Art and a quantum leap forward for Nicole Atkins who, no matter how much she grows up, will always be a little crazy. Come out and see Nicole Atkins at The Basement on August 16th!
