Post-punk / grunge rockers Castle Black release the gods that adored you EP

Full of sonic hooks and social anthems, Castle Black’s fourth studio release
will be supported by upcoming midwestern / eastern U.S. tour

BROOKLYN, NY | JUNE 29, 2018 – Post-punk grunge band Castle Black present their fourth studio EP today, the gods that adored you. Blending the band’s signature heavy-hitting post-punk and grunge hooks, along with exploring new sonic elements, the release showcases the bands growth and confidence in finding their stride. Full of powerfully reflective lyrics, the gods that adored you comes as a mirror to society, harking a cry for awareness, and catalyst for action.

the gods that adored you premiered on PureGrain Audio who said the release, “once again highlights the band’s female vocal attack and punk/alt-rock blend, a mighty mixture as evidenced by Castle Black’s ongoing success and energetic live shows.” Kicking off with a powerful punch, the release takes you on a carefully curated sonic journey. The EP is divided into two sections, Part A: Fucked and Part B: Adored – a polarity that was derived from the fourth track “A Cigarette, Saved.” Vocalist Leigh Celent shared, “The parts are distinctly different, in terms of the sound of the songs and the feeling, but both fit together to make up the whole of the album.” As with the band’s previous releases, they carefully crafted the song order, with purposeful trajectory for listeners to experience.

The EP’s title also derives from the lyrics of “A Cigarette, Saved.” Celent explained its importance, “The actual lyric is “fucked over the gods that adored you.” There’s a conscious choice to use “that” over “who” to leave a general sense of ambiguity regarding the gods. In addition, the album title is not capitalized. The feeling of the entire album is this lack of capitalization, this lack of a proper format or adherence to illogical norms.” Questioning and reflecting on society, the band leaves each track open to interpretation. “Sierra”, released as a lead single, was written after Celent read about the plight of women in Sierra Leone, many of whom face domestic and sexual violence on a daily basis, with lack of legal protection or enforcement to bring change. While directly inspired, Celent noted that the track can be applied to a wider scope, as a stand against all forms of violence and injustices in the world.

the gods that adored you was recorded at Behind the Curtains Media studio in Brooklyn, NY, by Michael Abiuso (The Venetia Fair, Kiss Kiss, The Gay Blades). The record’s unique division is also further emphasized, as Part A: Fucked was mixed by Michael Abiuso, while legendary engineer and producer Mark Plati (David Bowie, Prince, Spookey Ruben, The Cure) mixed Part B: Adored, with additional production. Mastering was completed by Jamal Ruhe, of West West Side Music. A powerful piece of its own, the album art was completed by painter Sgott Mackenzie.

the gods that adored you is out everywhere today, including Spotify, Bandcamp and Apple Music. Physicals can be purchased direct from the band. In support of the new release, Castle Black will embark on a full summer tour across the midwest and eastern U.S. Driving forward with their heavy hitting hooks, powerful social anthems, and sheer determination, Castle Black work relentlessly to stay at the forefront of the the NYC music scene, earning their place as a must-watch artist.

ABOUT CASTLE BLACK:

Castle Black is a Brooklyn-based rock band, bringing a powerful and thunderous sound, full of hard-hitting jams, never sacrificing the hook.  Described as drawing from punk, post-punk, grunge, alternative and new wave, Castle Black defies the average rock genre.  Each song careens through an almost stream of consciousness depiction of life stories, social anthems and raw emotions.  With an intense live show, “impossible to tell was coming next, except that it was bound to be loud and hard and intense – and catchy” (NY Music Daily), Castle Black is a “reminder of what dominating guitar riffs, melodic basslines, booming drums and a powerful singer with rock prowess can do.”  (Subversive Zine)

“The trio seamlessly blend ’80s punk with the heyday of grunge across powerful tunes that roar with a gritty melody,” (New Noise Magazine) and are “the kind of band you want to catch on the way up,” (New York Music Daily), whose “sound is an inventive and stimulating mixture of genres,” making “Castle Black’s style one of a kind.” (Indie Rock Café)  NY Music Daily included their 2017 release Trapped Under All You Know on their Best of 2017 list, included the single “Broken Bright Star” on the Best Songs of 2017 list, and included their live show on their Best Shows of 2017 list.  Music Existence named the band among their Top Alternative Rock Picks of 2017.

Their fourth studio EP, the gods that adored you, will be released on June 29th, 2018, and includes mixes from Mark Plati (known for his work with David Bowie and Prince, among others).   The first single “Sierra” was released on June 15th, 2018, and has been widely adored, “taking to issue all of the tremors that are shaking the world today with the punk and tone strong voices can only make.” (Uncivil Revolt)  They have released three other EPs: Trapped Under All You Know (2017), Losing Forever (2016) and Find You There (2015), as well as several singles and official videos, in addition to a limited-edition run of a lathe-cut record for their single “Blind Curtain,” released on Leesta Val Sound Recordings.

Castle Black has played several popular festivals, including Mondo Fest, Northside Fest, NJ Shore Fest and Staten Island’s PrideFest.  The band was  selected through an audition process as one of a handful of female-fronted groups for Summer on the Hudson’s Make Some Noise Festival in 2017, which highlighted women musicians making an impact on the NYC music scene.   They have opened for several notable acts, including Richard Lloyd (of Television), Big D and the Kids Table and POD.  The actively touring band has had their songs played on both domestic and international radio shows, including Strawberry Tongue Radio, Banks Radio Australia, Vulcan Sound Radio, Rock Radio UK, Radio Free Brooklyn, Radio KSCR, Lionheart Radio UK, Lucky Star Radio, Radio Tatras International, Kane FM, Valley FM 89.5, 3rd Strike Radio, Riviera FM and many more.
