Album Review – Shallow Side’s new EP “One” – Release date 1/13/2017

Shallow Side’s New EP “One”

You know that groovy rock and roll that just makes you want to get up and move your body while you close your eyes and get lost in the music? That is what Shallow Side gives us in their new EP titled ONE, which will be released by Thermal Entertainment tomorrow.

Alabama natives Eric Boatright (vocals), Cody Hampton (bass/guitar), Seth Trimble (guitar/keyboard), and Heath Fields (drums) are on a mission to “remind the world how rock & roll can be such a strong force in everyone’s lives” by making music that show people from all walks of life how great rock and roll music can be. Shallow Side just received their highest honor to date being selected Loudwire’s Best New Artist of the Year (past winners included Saint Asonia and Baby Metal), and after listening to this EP it is easy to understand why they were bestowed such an honor.

ONE has 6 songs that just suck you in from the very beginning and make you want more when you get to the end. The first song, “We Roll”, starts with a driving beat and has the flavor of dirty southern rock. You can’t help but want to grind your hips and get into the groove. “Start a Fire” and “Rebel” have a similar style where “Fight or Flight” and “Can You Hear Me” have more of a traditional hard rock vibe that makes you want to do more head banging that hip grinding.

One hot single from the EP is the remake of the Styx song “Renegade.” It’s a solid remake with a killer guitar solo and a fantastic video. Even legendary Styx vocalist/guitarist and writer of “Renegade”, Tommy Shaw, gave the band high props for their version of the song by saying, “I’m impressed by these guys.  Good arrangement, good performance, good video.”

While the “Renegade” remake is stellar and certainly helped give the band good exposure, the original Shallow Side tunes are really the gems on the EP. They have a unique style – aggressive but danceable, rock but with a soul groove. All six songs hook you in and make it easy for you to put this EP on repeat.

ONE is a teaser for a full-length release to come out later this year. In the meantime the band will be touring throughout February with Seasons After.
