European metal has shaped the landscape of the heavy metal genre for decades. But who shaped the sound of modern European metal itself? Henrik Udd and the producers of Studio Fredman (owned and operated by legendary producer Fredrik Nordström) should certainly be partially credited for this endeavor, and for evolving it into what it is today. Since honing his chops by mixing and engineering records by the likes of Firewind, Nightrage and Bring Me The Horizon at the turn of the century, Udd remains at the forefront of the European metal trend, most recently producing, mixing, engineering and/or mastering records by massive groups such as Delain and At The Gates.
Henrik Udd’s most recent production/mixing/engineering/mastering work appears on Architects‘ 2016 full length release, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, which features the searing, melodic track, “Gone With The Wind“. This month, NAIL THE MIX is pleased to host Henrik Udd as guest mixer to analyze his mixing process on this track.
Udd will lead an exclusive livestreaming class offering a complete walkthrough of how he mixed “Gone With The Wind”. NAIL THE MIX subscribers can download the multi-tracks today, then join Udd for the livestream on July 2. NTM will also host a Q&A chat with Udd on June 15 at 12:00pm ET, exclusively available to subscribers. Register for the Q&A here.
Henrik Udd says, “I’m very excited to be a part of NAIL THE MIX and get a chance to share the approach that I used when mixing Architects‘ “Gone with the Wind”. Also, I’m very curious and a bit scared to hear what it’ll sound like when someone else is mixing something really dear and special to me. I hope you will find it interesting to watch me mix it, and in the meantime, have fun with it and let your neighbors now that Mr. F# just moved in and is staying for the whole month.”

Subjects and challenges to be discussed include taming the low end of your mix, allowing a mix to sound huge and aggressive while not losing a sense of “beauty”, and other topics.

NTM‘s Eyal Levi adds, “Studio Fredman, what can I say? If you’re anything like me, as an up-and-coming producer and lover of music, the whole Swedish metal sound of the late 90s and turn of the century has played a huge role in your life. Bands like At The Gates, Opeth and Dimmu Borgir helped define what the edges of badass metal were, and how it’s production would evolve. And while it’s accurate and safe to say that Henrik Udd is a direct descendant of the Swedish discipline, he’s carved a path and sound in his own right, and god damn it’s crushing! He’s one of the very best mixers of our time; educated in the past, while helping to push the bar forward. I cannot wait to have him on NAIL THE MIX. This has been a long time coming.”
