Kerrang! Magazine is currently streaming Mysterium Tremendum, the long-anticipated new full-length from Portland-based progressive sludge metal unit, LORD DYING.
Set for worldwide release tomorrow, April 26th via Entertainment One (eOne), the band’s first full-length in four years was captured at Los Angeles’ West Valley Recording Studios in August of 2018 with producer Mike Plotnikoff (Fear Factory, In Flames), mastered by Howie Weinberg (Slayer, Nirvana, Pantera, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and boasts the striking planetary landscape-inspired cover art of Steve R. Dodd. A monolithic, riff-heavy concept album delivering eleven weighty tracks that survey the many facets of dying and what may or may not exist in the afterlife, Mysterium Tremendum is emotionally nourishing both musically and lyrically.
Writes Kerrang! of the output: “Up until now, Portland, Oregon’sLORD DYING have been a metal band, dealing in art of teeth-gnashing, rage-filled, sludgy thrash. But their third album has turned their entire sound on its head: It’s a layered, intricate, downright beautiful progressive-rock opus… a concept record they said was intended to be written about life, but after the sudden, unexpected death of guitarist Chris Evans’ sister and a cancer diagnosis for both of vocalist/guitarist Erik Olson’s parents, ultimately ended up being written about death.”
Stream Mysterium Tremendum in its entirety alongside an in-depth interview with guitarist/vocalist Erik Olson at THIS LOCATION.
Mysterium Tremendum will be released on CD, 2XLP, and digital formats. For preorder options go to smarturl.it/LordDyingMT.

“…its slow build into soaring melodies and heavier sludge is extremely gratifying, feeling like a journey was accomplished over the song’s runtime.” — Decibel on “Freed From The Pressures Of Time
“LORD DYING’s about-face came out of nowhere and it works despite the odds. Mysterium Tremendum is definitely album of the year caliber and rightfully so because it’s more than an album, it’s an experience.” — Indy Metal Vault
“…full of emotional intensity and some of the band’s most nuanced performances to date… This record is triumphant and powerful, the next step forward for a metal band looking to find their way after years of silence.” — Two Guys Metal Reviews
“…a solid metal concept… a record that deserves to be played from front to back to experience the full impact of its story, while individual tracks are strong enough that cherry-picking favorites can offer equal reward.” — Metal Nexus
“…its use of swelling melancholia during the two-minute introduction sounds like the prelude to demise, complete with hints of violin that seamlessly metamorphise into a new brand of LORD DYING sludge. Guitarist/vocalist Erik Olson’s vocal range has expanded this time around, offering clear and refined death growls that complement the progressive and euphonious riffs.” — MetalSucks on “Freed From The Pressures Of Time”
“It’d be around the second listen where I’d latched onto this album and would find every moment of this album vital at some point. I believe the lyrics explore an untapped hospice-like state that will be cathartic and valuable to folks who are dealing with death, their beloved dying, and the mourning after… a grand leap in earnest from LORD DYING and one of finer masterpieces of progressive sludge in recent memory, as such I can very highly recommend it.” — Grizzly Butts
“This album, and its concept centered around death signals a triumphant rebirth for LORD DYING as a band. Do not miss out on this experience.” — Heavy Music HQ
“The band is really stretching their creative wings on the new effort, as you’ll hear on the psychedelic-yet-heavy new track ‘Freed From The Pressures Of Time.’ The introductory bit is a good half of the entire song, but the payoff really makes it worth it.” — Metal Injection on “Freed From The Pressures Of Time”
