Cobi Review:
by Katie Morton
Cobi is an American musician from Grand Marais, Minnesota, and former member of the Boston-based band Gentlemen Hall. He left the band in 2014 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a solo career. Cobi released his solo single “Don’t You Cry For Me” on May 3, 2016 under 300 Entertainment, and performed it live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with members of The Roots, on January 23, 2017.
Saturday afternoon Cobi opened the Sawyer Point Stage at Bunbury Music Festival. The crowd was sparse but filled as his vocals drifted over the festivalgoers streaming through the main gate. Unfamiliar with Cobi when the Bunbury lineup was announced, I listened to his music on Spotify in the days before the show. I anticipated a mellow solo set, but was caught off guard by the performance quality and full sound his band produced in a live venue. While solo in vocals his band filled the stage and banks of the Ohio river with upbeat songs bringing to mind the intonation of John Mayer mixed with Gavin DeGraw. Check out Cobi and his band at music festivals across the country this summer from Basiica Block Party in Minneapolis, to Lollapalooza in Chicago.
