The Rocket Summer continues to showcase singer-songwriter Bryce Avary‘s knack for catchy melody and heartfelt emotionality with his new single “Gone Too Long”, debuting today with a lyric video on Billboard. The new song comes just a few weeks before the start of Do You Feel 10 Year Anniversary Tour which will see The Rocket Summer play their celebrated 2007 album Do You Feel and choice cuts from the rest of their discography on a full US tour starting July 20th.

Of the haunting, introspective new song, Avary told Billboard: “Sometimes I’ll hear a song or smell a certain smell or just some sort of deja vu moment happens and it causes a sense of missing something that’s deep within me but I can’t really put my finger on what it is. Creating a feeling that maybe part of me drifted away from myself without ever really realizing it was happening at all along the way.”

On “Gone Too Long”, we hear a darker side of The Rocket Summer that was very much present in the 2016 album Zoetic. Recorded while isolated in a cabin in the woods, Avary played every instrument on the track, giving it an extra personal touch. Lyrics like “The taste of light in words you write are brief escapes” carried with haunting keyboard effects, harmonies, and riding guitars darting in and out all combine and convey a sense of hypnotic and energetic anxiety that exudes a sense of hopefulness. The arresting lyric video (produced by marketing wunderkinds Ride or Cry) features a wandering POV through late night city streets, with the lyrics to the song manually projected across the landscape like a literary dreamscape. The restlessness felt in “Gone Too Long” reflects Avary’s persistent passion to create, as he’s said he’s “in a perpetual state of making new music.”  He explained the decision to release a new song ahead of the Do You Feel 10 Year Anniversary Tour by saying, “To me this tour is like we’re looking back and looking forward at the same time. You know, it’s kinda like break dancing and then fully dropping into the splits; one leg back, one leg forward, jazz hands in the air.”With official support from 888, the Do You Feel 10 Year Anniversary Tour (all dates posted below) kicks off in his home state of Texas on July 20 at Austin’s Antone’s and circles North America, hitting venues such as Dallas’ Trees (July 21), NYC’s Gramercy Theatre (August 3), Toronto’s The Mod Club (August 8),  Chicago’s The Bottom Lounge (August 12), SF’s Slim’s (Aug. 24), and Los Angeles’ The Roxy (August 25). VIP tickets are sold out across all dates, but general tickets are currently available at http://www.therocketsummer.com/tour/.
