Joywave – Bunbury Music Festival Day 1

Joywave

By Katie Morton

Late Friday afternoon, opening day for Bunbury Music Festival, Joywave took the Sawyer Point stage in all white jump suits, with vocalist Daniel Armbruster rocking some old-school track pants, and belting out “Blastofff” with it’s disco funk vibe. In a departure from more traditional video footage, Google searches using the word “Joy” flashed across the screen for the crowd’s amusement during the set.

The band continued to play favorites like “Somebody New” which had bass and drums front and center and followed with “It’s a Trip” which was much more poppy in nature. The band showed their range and played to the crowd asking, “Where is your Blink 182 now?” referencing the band’s controversial cancellation from the festival. The crowd ate it up.

Joywave is an American indie rock band from Rochester, New York. Band members include Daniel Armbruster (vocals), Joseph Morinelli (guitar), Kevin Mahoney (bass), Benjamin Bailey (keyboards), and Paul Brenner (drums). Front man Armbruster’s signature look includes 70’s glasses and a thick throwback moustache, but the sound is more reminiscent of 90’s musician Matthew Sweet. If you want to get a feel for the band’s sense of humor, visit their website and play around with the DOS prompts while you attempt to find what you are looking for. Throwback indeed!
