Concert Review – Nonpoint & A Killer’s Confession – Alrosa Villa

The thunder of pure hard rock filled Alrosa Villa in Columbus this night when six bands stormed the stage for The Poison Red tour. Nonpoint headlined the show and was joined by openers The Last Rise, 8lb Pressure, Messer, Nine Shrines, and A Killer’s Confession.

Local bands The Last Rise and 8lb Pressure kicked things off and both delivered hot and heavy sets that got the crowd pumped. The dichotomy of the two performances was interesting as The Last Rise was theatrical in a Slipknot-esque way and 8lb Pressure was casual and down to earth. Both were highly entertaining in their own ways. One of my favorite moments of the night was when 8lb Pressure covered the Twenty One Pilots hit “Heathens” to close their set. That was unexpected and awesome.

Messer from Dallas was a surprise addition to the lineup and they wowed the crowd with their unique sound and engaging stage presence. Messer infuses cutting edge technology into their music that allows them to an audio and visual experience you will not forget.

Nine Shrines from Cleveland blasted the crowd next with a loud and lively set. The played with passion and never stopped head banging. I was excited to hear a live performance of their song “King of Mercy” which just won the Sirius XM Octane Test Drive last week. I wasn’t disappointed.

When A Killer’s Confession came on I had to push my way as close to the stage as possible to take in what I knew would be a kick ass performance led by the former frontman of Mushroomhead, Waylon Reavis. It has been two long years since Reavis was in Ohio and he said he had definitely “missed all [us] motherfuckers!” We missed you too, Waylon. The AKC set was so freaking amazing – but unfortunately too short. When Reavis announced the start of their last song, I felt more than a twinge of disappointment.

But my spirits lifted when the main event took the stage. Nonpoint has been around for more than 20 years and their experience shines through in their live performances. The band performed songs from their extensive setlist including tunes from their latest release The Poison Red, which is the is the band’s ninth studio album.

The show at Alrosa was one of the last for the band until 2019. They are taking a hiatus from touring after their remaining two stops on this tour in order to recharge and spend time with family. Nonpoint will return to performing in front of packed houses in 2019.
