John 5 and The Creatures once again visited the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area and performed at the Southgate House Revival on February 22, 2018.
I’ve seen John 5 and The Creatures perform at The Southgate House Revival three times now and each time has been a great experience. The venue is an old church that has been converted into one of Cincinnati’s coolest places to see a show. This large red brick building dates to 1866, and was home to Grace Methodist Episcopal Church for 120 years. The setting at this old church could not be better for a show featuring slasher/horror movie bits on TV screens and song titles such as “Season of the Witch”, “Doctor Evil’s Spookshow”, and “Making Monsters”.
When John 5 and The Creatures took the stage the crowd was exuberant, the moment everyone has been waiting for had arrived!! The band and John 5 performed flawlessly all night long! Treating his guitar is like an appendage, John 5 moves his body and guitar in ways to communicate the emotion of his music to the crowd. John 5 and The Creatures performed a number of songs throughout the night including “Flight of the Vulcan Kelly”, “Dr. Evil’s Spookshow”, and “Season of The Witch”. John 5 also broke out into medley’s covering “Enter Sandman”, “Eruption”, I think I even heard “Hot For Teacher” in there somewhere!
Throughout the night I saw a number of different guitars and even a banjo! At one point in the show John 5 came out with a guitar that glows green liquid inside to which he took a violin bow and played it similar to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. John 5 is just masterful at his art! There are many times that I leave a show to go edit photos or do a write up but for tonight’s show I stayed until the very end. It was truly a fun time! John 5 is a serious guitar “guru”, but on stage he smiles for the camera phones being pushed into his face, he brings out a ray gun and a creepy talking doll and plays the guitar with them, it really seems like he’s having a great time with the crowd!
The night ended with a 10-15 minute music medley that had some Van Halen songs, Pantera, Alice in Chains, Slayer, White Zombie, Marilyn Manson, and even Rage Against the Machine. It was quite the finale and I don’t think a soul left the venue until that last note was played on John 5’s guitar!
John 5 and The Creatures are in the middle of a 43 show tour and currently are taking a few days off before hitting the road again in March and April. I would highly recommend getting tickets to see one of the best guitarists out there live in a city near you!
John 5 and The Creatures recently put out a new album called “It’s Alive” which is a live album that was recorded last year. The album just like the live show is all instrumental and the melody’s that John 5 lays down on the guitar are wonderful! It’s Alive! is available to order in all versions here, including physical CD and LP, MP3’s, etc.
