Every Hour Kills recently released a thoughtful and creative EP (christened “Scorecore”) called “Fragile Machine”. Members include–ex-Divinity guitarist Alan Sacha Laskow (ENDITOL, the Order of the Gray, Walk As Chaos), bassist Brent Stutsky (ex-Breach of Trust, ex-Death Valley Dolls), along with vocalist Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster (ex-Out of Your Mouth, ex-Autobody, ex-the R.A.C.E.). Adding to the stellar line-up are appearances by guest vocals: Andrew Ivashchenko (Shokran), Renny Carroll (Flux Conduct), Jonathan Thorpenberg (The Unguided), David Chunn (Vallite) and Mark Haggblad (Unveil the Strength) & Guest Guitar Solos by Andy James, Mattias IA Eklundh, Daniele Gottardo and Paul Wardingham.
Now if that doesn’t perk your attention, I’m not sure what will. Currently the band has a few singles out. Their latest being Illusorian which blends keys, crushing rhythmic stop and go riffs, deep bass lines, precise drumming and dynamic meaningful singing. Which brings something interesting in this almost progressive djent style of music: clean vocals. Unlike some other bands, Every Hour Kills is able to effortlessly add those clean vocals, which gives each song an ethereal quality.
The vocals are only one piece of this puzzle. The technical drumming and the bass’ grooving quality adds the solid foundation upon which the superb guitar fretwork comes in like a spider dancing along its web, enticing the listener into its clutches for its dark slumber. Lyrically, the top is of time, space and technology are presented metaphorically, giving the listener a deep and thoughtful experience.
Illusorian is unfortunately over too quick. Although a nice added bonus to this album is the that each song is also presented in its instrumental state in which musicians and lovers of music can enjoy it for another round. Bravo to Every Hour Kills.
