NEW YORK CITY | AUGUST 31, 2018 – NYC’s post-punk / shoegaze outfit A Very Special Episode released their sophomore EP Cut for Time today. Drawing listeners in with powerful female-fronted vocals, the band defies genre boundaries, blending elements of post-punk, noise rock, and alternative rock, to ethereal shoe-gaze tones all with a hint of glam-pop attitude. The release comes as their first under Knuckle Down Records, whom the band signed with earlier this spring. Cut for Time is out everywhere today and available in physical vinyl and CD format. The new release marks a strong surge of growth for the band, as they have shifted to a much more aggressive and fast-paced tempo across the board, while elements of their intimate and atmospheric roots still are found in layered melodies and intricate guitar work. Rebel Noise, who premiered the EP, described them as “seriously dynamic and vivid” with Kasey Heisler’s vocals taking a lead, being “clear and sweet-tart in tone, but she belts it out with punk spirit.”
The band shared, “The goal of the EP was to create definitive versions of several of our songs that started as bedroom demos along with a couple new ones. ‘Gravity’ and ‘Still Here’ mostly remained the same with a faster tempo and higher production quality. ‘Crazy’ was radically transformed from a slow ballad to a as-fast-as-we-can punk track. ‘On Our Own Again’, if not obvious from the title, was a bottom up reimagining of Censored Dreams’ ‘On Our Own’ that ended up being completely its own thing. ‘Invitation to Delete’ is then our most pure new song that was created as a cathartic response to toxic social and political discourse online.” Blurring the lines between genres, A Very Special Episode are well on their way to honing a brightly dynamic and original sound that will appeal to a variety of listeners.
The band recently released their first official music video for their track “Gravity“. They shared, “’Gravity’ is one of the oldest songs we’ve ever written and inspired by Stranger Things.” The video, which was directed and shot by Emma Shalaway, plays with the duality of parallel universes and recollection, bringing the tracks lyrics to life. Heavily inspired by television and pop culture, the band embraces these influences in much of their music.
Cut for Time was produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Brandon Bujnowski at If and Only If Productions. It is available digitally everywhere today including Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music. Fans can order physical formats on CD and vinyl through Bandcamp, or Knuckle Down Records. The band will celebrate with an EP release show on September 8 at Gutter Bar (200 N 14th St, Brooklyn, NY) with The Rizzos, But Pyrite, and The Loneliers.
