Oct. 30, 2018, Providence, R.I. – Daughters, the Rhode Island-based outfit whose very recently released album, You Won’t Get What You Want, has been widely praised with Rolling Stones aying of the 10-track release: “If heavy music is supposed to be scary, Daughters have elevated it to an invigorating new level,” have partnered with fine artist Alexander Barton for a short film dubbed “Magic Relighting Candle” (https://youtu.be/KqntnTfFcHE) “As a friend and collaborator of Daughters, I complimented six minutes of experimentation with a familiar household performance to their introductory track ‘City Song,’ explains Barton (alexanderbarton.com). “The flame teases the hopeful youth and rhythmically refuses his satisfaction. Flickering in and out of grain and noise, disappointment and smoke, ‘Magic Relighting Candle’ challenges the creative and superstitious.” “Alex has been an important friend and cohort for about 20 years now,” adds guitar player Nick Sadler. “He is also one of my favorite creative thinks.  Empty Glass pedal

The band has also partnered with Fuzzrocious Pedals to create the Empty Glass pedal, which was used on “City Song” The pedal is for sale exclusively via Reverb.com with a demo of the pedal in action here: https://youtu.be/k2z-Ubmsqhk. Empty Glass takes the base circuit of Fuzzrocious’ M.O.T.H. and slightly alters it to expand its capabilities further. First, a dirty, monophonic octave up circuit slams the M.O.T.H., creating metallic, harsh octave up drive/distortion. Via the DRONE footswitch, users can activate an oscillator with controls for the volume of the droning oscillator, a blend to mix the drive/distortion signal with the oscillator, and a drone pot to control the sweep of pitched oscillation ranging from the guttural revving of a V8 engine to the ear-piercing screech of tinnitus. “Ryan at Fuzzrocious came up w a modded version of one of his pedals that he thought might be a useful tool for Daughters,” said Sadler. “We traded the prototype and new ideas, back and forth, for nearly a year until I was able to sit down and begin applying the Empty Glass to this shelved self-referential percussion pattern. Empty Glass provides almost 100% of the music you hear in ‘City Song’ – the challenge being in how to turn a simple drone tool into performative music.” Daughters’ fall tour, which already boasts several sold out dates, kicks off tomorrow night in Richmond. Following the release of their 2010 self-titled album, the band took an indefinite hiatus, returning in 2013 for a pair of sold out hometown shows in Providence, and a subsequent smattering of live dates in the intervening years, including joining Dillinger Escape Plan for their final live outings in December of 2017. Daughters have been hailed for their visceral performances, both live and on record, with Pitchfork describing them as “manic” and “pummeling” and Punk News pointing to their “frantic energy” and “spastic urgency.” |
