September Mourning is a transmedia dark fantasy for your ears and eyes.

The Thompson House in Newport, KY was packed with rowdy rock fans for The Mistletoe Rock Show presented by 96 Rock on December 15. The nearly sold out show featured an incredible lineup of bands including locals American Sin and national artists September Mourning and From Ashes to New. 96 Rock DJs also entertained the crowd between songs with their ugly Christmas sweaters and upbeat banter. It was a great way to kick off the holiday season!
But it was September Mourning that stole the show for me. Under a shroud of darkness, four images – Emily Lazar (lead vocals), Rich Juzwick (guitars, backing vocals), Kyle Mayer (drums), and Patrick Romanelli (guitars) – stalked onto the stage and kicked things off with “Eye of the Storm” from their 2016 album Volume II. The live performance was supplemented with a graphic art video telling the story of heroine September Mourning and her quest to navigate the worlds of both the living and the dead.
Short clips of the September Mourning graphic novels, created by Lazar and Marc Silvestri, added a whole new dimension to the musical side of the story being told on stage. The multimedia performance included several songs from Volume II such as “Skin and Bones”, “Angels to Dust”, “Children of Fate” and their cover of the Ben E. King hit “Stand By Me”. The band also played their two newest singles “Empire” and “Glass Animals”.
I always love watching this band live. It’s so much more than just a concert – it is a visual and auditory masterpiece from beginning to end. Not only is the graphic art video incredibly intriguing to watch, but equally entertaining are the movements and expressions of the band when they perform. They are animated and fluid and passionate with every beat.
If you have never seen September Mourning live, you will have another chance in March of 2019 when they are on The Oblivion of Souls Tour with Rise Among Rivals and Smile Empty Soul. You will not be disappointed in the unique experience this band brings to every show.
