Interview with Chris Hobbs of Cavo
Chris Hobbs Ya, I remember we started jamming this song right around the time we were hitting our stride as a band. We were writing a lot and in one rehearsal I just started messing around playing the main guitar line. I’d learned it cus I just really loved the song and everyone just started tinkering around with it and it just came together fast. It was cool because it came out of jamming it together for fun and not really note for note trying to recreate the original. I think that’s why it felt like the song was being served its justice while also feeling like us too. We broke it out at the next show and it landed really well with the crowd! Since then it’s been a staple for us for most live performances
What is it about this particular song that brought this about and why Duran Duran cover? Chris Hobbs This song always spoke to me growing up. It has a dark beauty to it along with a killer groove and great guitar line. What we liked about covering it was it wasn’t what you’d expect from us but seemed to fit and was great to jam live.
How did you present it live? Did you want to stay true to its original form or did you create Cavo into the weave? Chris Hobbs We definitely wanted to put our spin on the song and make it our own version.
Why release now as a track to stream or purchase?
Chris Hobbs We had a recording we put on a local EP when we were first shopping for a deal. We’ve now been playing this live for a long time and never released it on any streaming platforms. Seemed like a great time to remix the recording we had and finally release it!
Is the recording and production similar or completely different than live on “Come Undone”?
Chris Hobbs We really wanted to capture how it felt live when we went into the studio. It’s pretty much as we played live for the first time on the recording.
How did the connection with the backing vocalist, Shannon come about? Chris Hobbs Shannon was big in the STL scene when we started up as a band. She was working on some solo material out of the same studio we were in and we struck up a great relationship working together. She was the obvious choice for the female vocals to put on the song. Listening to the mixed track for the first time it was crazy how good she sounded in the song and how organically it came together.
“Come Undone” is a step outside of what Cavo really is wouldn’t you say? Chris Hobbs That’s tough for me to say… On one hand, I can definitely see how we are not similar bands at all. On the other what I’ve always loved about Duran Duran is they’re a band that’s had many different chapters to their career. We/they put out The Wedding Album it was very different from their earlier stuff and highlighted a whole new side of the band. We have always strived for that as a band not to become complacent in one space and always be reaching for that next chapter of Cavo.
What is coming, what can we anticipate and get ready to purchase? Chris Hobbs We plan on hitting the studio soon! We have some new tunes we want to record and maybe a few covers as well. We can’t wait to get back at it and start making music again! Stay tuned
