Uncured Medusa review 2017

By Cathy Moore of Moore Rock Shots & Reviews

I get asked to review a lot of music from up and coming bands. Sometimes I feel like my head will explode with the monotony of sound that comes from my speakers. However, that can’t be said for the latest album from NYC progressive metal band Uncured. As soon as the music started, I sat up and said, “Whoa. This is different. Finally!”

Uncured has been attracting international attention for its combination of technical musicianship, brutal riffs, and beautiful melodic interludes.  The band released its first full-length record Medusa on March 10 of this year and it has received rave reviews.

Uncured was founded in 2015 by brothers Rex Cox and Zak Cox.  Zak and Rex both play guitar and sing, and together wrote all of the material on Medusa.  Joining Uncured on drums is Liam Manley from Portland, Oregon.  Liam has over 13 years experience playing drums, including five years of professional session work with various artists across the U.S.  Jon Kita from Boston, Massachusetts, who also plays with metal stalwarts Diecast and City of Homes, rounds out the Uncured line-up on bass.

Together these four guys have a stunning chemistry and a musicality that seems far beyond their age and experience. It’s as if they have been playing together forever and know the nuances of song structure, lyrical power, and complex instrumentation. It’s really impressive.

Medusa is full of brilliant tracks that mix progressive tech metal with raw and relatable lyrics. There are so many unexpected surprises sprinkled throughout that you don’t want to skip a song and risk missing something phenomenal.

“Enucleate” is one of the most intriguing songs I’ve heard in a long time. It’s a storm of sound starting with thrashing guitars and frantic drums and then dropping into an almost poetic instrumental piece before things once again crescendo into the full assault of power Uncured can unleash.

My favorite song on the CD is “Antipsychotic” which starts off like something you would expect to hear from Santana. It’s mellow and almost peaceful and showcases some incredible guitar talent. But underlying this tranquil and smooth musical number are vocals that paint a picture of madness or pain. The contrast between the two pieces is really jarring and makes for a melodic masterpiece.

“Spontaneous Regeneration” closes the CD and is a largely an instrumental track with a range of styles from a groovy dance vibe to a full on thrash fest. It assaults your senses and makes you want to hit repeat…again and again.

Uncured recently concluded a 6-week tour of North America with Swedish metal giants Katatonia.  The band is quickly gaining a reputation among fans and critics for its aggressive, technical, yet highly diverse live performances.  Uncured is hitting the road with DevilDriver on August 18 for a US Summer Tour through September. If they have half the energy live that they express on this CD then it will be one hell of a show. Don’t miss it.
