There aren’t very many albums that I can listen to straight through from beginning to end without wanting to skip at least one song. However, Polyester Zeal, the 2015 album from RED SUN RISING, is one of those albums. I love every single song. It has a unique sound and infectious groove that make it a musical masterpiece that I still can’t get enough of.
And I clearly wasn’t the only one who loved it. The band earned their own piece of rock history with two back-to-back #1 hit singles off of a debut album on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart with Polyester Zeal’s first two singles, “The Otherside” and “Emotionless.” This marked the first time in over a decade that a band had achieved back-to-back #1s on the Rock Chart.
Now the question is: Can they do it again? RED SUN RISING’s sophomore album, Thread, will be released on March 30 and after three years fans are salivating for new music from the Akron, Ohio rockers. Produced by Matt Hyde (Deftones, AFI, Porno For Pyros) and mixed by Jay Ruston, Thread continues to expand on RED SUN RISING’s concept of mixing different genres and influences to create a unique sound.
When asked about the new album, lead singer Mike Protich stated, “This album feels like a rebirth. Although RSR played 140 shows on our last tour, it was not until we made this album that I felt we became a band. The growth and evolution of RSR that you will hear in our sound and our songwriting builds on our ‘Thread’ mentality (songs that people can love and sing with us but don’t fit a mold). We aren’t chasing trends and never will.”
After listening to the new album, I can assure fans that they are going to be impressed with Thread. The talented band that we fell in love with back in 2015 is back and better than ever with an album full of impassioned and impressive songs. Driving guitars, groovy rhythms, and anthemic lyrics combine to create another phenomenal release.
The first single from Thread, “Deathwish”, is an energetic and driving song with a dark and twisted apocalyptic video making it an undeniably enjoyable romp that is already tearing up the rock charts. The second release, “Fascination” has a little different feel – a little slower groove with softer verses that slam into a big and powerful chorus. The video is a brilliant black and white classic-style film depicting an adventurous trip to the moon and back. It’s hilarious and fascinating (pun intended).
The latest release, “Left For Dead”, is one of my favorite songs on the album. The guitar riffs throughout and the background harmonies in the chorus add such depth to Protich’s voice as he belts out some of the best lyrics on the album.
My other favorite is the final track – “Evil Like You”. This song just blows my mind. It has this incredible piano part that sounds just like a toy piano I had as a little girl. It’s a haunting, saucy groove that seeps right into my soul. It makes me want to sway my hips and headbang all at the same time. It’s fantastic – just like the rest of the album. I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for new music from this band and Thread was definitely worth the wait.

The band will also be performing at all of the major rock festivals this year which gives them the opportunity to rock with old fans and bewitch new ones with their masterful musicality and formidable live performances.
