Debut release from 7 Minute Martians is pop punk at its finest
Remember how much we loved those 90s pop punk bands like blink-182, Sum 41, New Found Glory, and Green Day? It’s been a while since a new band in this genre has caught my attention, but 7 Minute Martians from my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio has accomplished that feat.
At just 14-years-old, 7 Minute Martians’ founding members Wil Viars (guitar/vocals) and Ted Ball (guitar/vocals) had discovered an unbreakable brotherly bond over guitars and pop-punk bands. In 2016, when getting ready to record their debut album, they connected with talented old friends Jordan Loper (bass/vocals) and Nick Neumeister (drums), who completed their lineup and set 7 Minute Martians into the music universe.
The band just released their debut album, Curious, last week after several long years of working to make it exactly the kind of record they wanted it to be. It’s an album that encapsulates the grieving heart, the lovelorn heart, and the heart longing for truth that finds comfort in a kindred soul. It is full of fast vocals and furious guitar licks fueled by brilliant drum beats and badass bass lines. There are slower, softer moments in songs like “All for Nothing” and “Damn Near Perfect” that quickly crescendo right back into the band’s signature driving power punk.
“Lost & Unfound” is one of my favorites on the album. It tells the story of the love of a city – a place that they have to leave behind to move forward in life. It was uplifting and inspiring and after hearing the lyrical chants of “don’t think just go” I was ready to leave my own city for something bigger!
“Smoked Out” is another personal favorite from Curious. I love the vocal blends on this song. The lyrics are compelling and cool and the video gives us a chance to watch the guys in action as they play with passion and presence.
“Stutter” is this absolutely charming song that seems to be about that “thing” that we love about another person – that thing that makes them who they are and what endears them to us. Honestly it made me think about someone in my life and his “thing” and it made me smile. It is clearly a really great song to invoke that kind of thought and emotion.
Curious is really great work from 7 Minute Martians. It’s lyrically creative and musically dynamic. They have a knack for writing catchy riffs and spilling their autobiographies in a unique way that’s both familiar and fresh, with no signs of slowing down. If you are nostalgic for that fun and fabulous 90s-style punk rock, I highly recommend you check out this up and coming band.
