Review of Sum 41’s album “Order in Decline” which is available TODAY via Hopeless Records!
By Megan Randall
I’m trying to kick my caffeine habit…which is fine because I’ve got an advanced copy of Sum 41’s Order in Decline. The group’s 7th album is all the energy I need to get through my day while I deal with this post-stimulant hump.
Deryck Whibley (lead vocals), Dave Baksh (guitar), Tom Thacker (guitar/keyboard), Jason McCaslin (bass), and Frank Zummo (drums) are back with an album that is more fiery and ferocious than the past several and I’m loving every note struck. It’s the perfect blend of serious themes lyrically told over their signature aggressive punk instrumentals.
The album kicks off with “Turning Away,” a song that focuses on moving onward and upward with your existence while leaving baggage behind. The first single released from the album, “Out for Blood” followed. If you listen to a quality radio station or streaming service, you’ve probably heard this one already. It hit the number one slot on Sirius XM’s Octane station and has over 4 million streams on Spotify. I feel like this song throws me back to their punk-iest All Killer, No Filler days.
The album definitely has political undertones, with many song lyrics referring to Whibley’s distaste for the current political atmosphere and figureheads. Each song dives a little deeper into his emotions, catchy beats sustaining the heavier tones. I personally enjoyed “The New Sensation,” which I feel is an anthem for finding your voice in this crazy world.
Notably, “Heads will Roll” and “Catching Fire” divert from the other album tracks. “Heads Will Roll” comes at you with a slow burn sound, reminding me of Clutch more than Sum 41. The song’s diversity is a great compliment to the Order in Decline package. “Catching Fire” is a nice, light ballad to end the album.
