Official Moscow EP review 2017

I feel like I owe Russian rocker Moscow a huge apology. I will admit when I saw the press release and request to review her debut EP Queen of Sin I thought – ugh, another woman exploiting her sexuality and pretending to be a musician. I will admit I was wrong. Moscow IS sexy, but she also has talent. Her songwriting is deep and relatable, and she has a set of pipes that prove she is much more than just a pretty face.
From the age of 15, Moscow was a part of the Russian music scene. “In Russia, the market is dominated by cheap pop music. It is next to impossible for a rock/metal band to break out. I hung out with some really dedicated and talented people, they taught me not to give up,” Moscow remembers.
And she didn’t give up. She worked hard, honed her craft, and now her debut EP Queen of Sin is released for the world to discover just what a talented (and sexy) artist she really is.
The EP kicks off with the title track, which is an alluring mix of melodic moments and guttural growls. The vocal dichotomy is a perfect delivery of lyrics that tell the tale of good versus evil and “the fatuity of creating ‘gods’ and ‘devils’ to define your acts and deeds instead of actually digging deep inside yourself and learn what YOU really want,” according to Moscow.
The second track, “Nowhere to Hide”, has a fast and furious pace driven by killer guitar riffs and beating drums. It’s a high-energy tune that compels you to bang your head, pound your fists and move your body
“Black Widow” blends a more electronic metal with vocals that teeter between melodic pop rock and the sexy screams. It’s definitely more mainstream rock than the other songs on the EP. The highlight of the song is the bridge that pulses and gives us a moment of that metal madness from Moscow.
My favorite track on the EP is definitely “Watch Me Burn”. The music is reminiscent of Evanescence with a symphonic sound and the lyrics are powerful and poignant. The piano…the crackle of the fire…the passion in Moscow’s voice. All elements that make this a striking song.
The last song on the EP is “Heartbeat” and it falls back into the harsh and heavy metal vocals with soaring guitar riffs and pulsing rhythms that hook you in and remind you that this woman is not messing around. She is no pop princess. She is a hard rock queen.
I would urge everyone to check out Moscow’s EP. Don’t make snap judgments based on stereotypes and assumptions. This young woman will rock your soul. She has a talent beyond her years in both songwriting and vocal range. There is something about Moscow that pulls you in and makes you want to hear more. I have a feeling she is on the periphery of a huge career in rock and roll.
